From Semester 1, 2016 we will offer a Masters in Ecological Public Health This course prepares graduates to work in a wide variety of fields by drawing on a broad range of courses across public health, environmental health, land use and urban planning, sociology, community development, health promotion and international development.
In fulfilling our mandate to protect public health, improve public health and social wellbeing, and reduce inequalities in health and social wellbeing, the PHA works within an operational framework of three areas: Public Health, Nursing and Allied Health Professionals, and Operations.
Also, in its Healthy 2020 initiative, the federal government called for an increase in public health experts across the country to prevent and treat diseases, identify potential threats, and facilitate collaboration both within and across communities.
Students who major in Public Health will gain an understanding of behavioral, economic, historical, political, and social determinants of health, and of the important relationships that statistics and science have on the design of public health interventions.
Physician advice, if given in the appropriate context, such as through motivational interviewing and considering the patient’s environment (moving beyond the health belief model into the social cognitive model for instance) is more effective in achieving sustainable behavior change.
