ASIAN/AMERICANS suffering from mental illnesses are less likely to seek help than other ethnic groups. Prayer, which was until recently considered unscientific, has now been shown to have beneficial effects on patients.1 Similarly, the current belief in psychiatry is that mental illnesses can be treated by medical professionals only and the person who is mentally ill has no control over their lives.
Common work activities in mental health counseling includes scheduling client appointments, completing risk assessments on clients as required, talking and counseling with clients (to help them make informed decisions about themselves, their lives and even relationships and future goals), providing consistent care and treatment programs for clients, keeping accurate client records, files and documentation and planning the most effective treatments.
At the request of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Mental Health (DMH) has developed an Incubation Program to assist nonprofit organizations that have a desire to provide services to mental health clients so as to build capacity within the Mental Health system.
Good line managers are essential in spotting early signs of distress and initiating early intervention, whereas poor line managers may make the situation worse or even be the cause of mental health problems through their approach, management style of behaviour.
We would be stigmatizing people and creating classes of mental wellness, and mental health practitioners would be under pressure to be dishonest in their assessments to keep people from being denied their rights or to even help them be safe in some situations.
